The American Burn Association established the National Burn Repository (NBR) as a public service to be a repository of burn-related data, voluntarily reported annually by participating burn centers.
To support scientific research, the ABA maintains a research dataset which is available to requestors−nonprofit, advocacy, medical and patient education, and commercial use. ABA released a 2019 update to the NBR Research Dataset and created two different options for the research community.
Dataset Requests
To submit your dataset request, complete the request form. Your request will be reviewed, and an invoice will be sent for payment. After payment is received, the dataset will be provided. All requests are approved by the Quality and Burn Registry Committee.
Criteria:
- There is a research question or need that the database can answer.
- All request form elements need to be completed properly.
- 1-2 page research summary must be attached.
The ABA terms statement needs to be signed by the requestor, once the request has been approved.
Patients admitted between July of 2015 and June of 2018
This set of files is organized in a parent-child relationship with the “main” table containing data elements that have a one-to-one relationship with the patient admission. The remaining tables (BQIP, Comorbidities, Complications, Diagnoses, Procedures, and 2nd and 3rd degree burn size locations) have one or multiple rows per patient admission. The definition and value labels for the data elements contained in the dataset can be found in the current National Burn Data Standard and Burn Quality Improvement Program Data Dictionaries.
Patients admitted between January of 2009 and June of 2018
This set of files is organized in a parent-child relationship with the “main” table containing data elements that have a one-to-one relationship with the patient admission. The remaining tables (Complications and Operations) have one or multiple rows per patient admission. This dataset combines data from ten years of data submissions which includes data collected on multiple software vendors, software versions, and data dictionaries. Significant effort was made to normalize the data into a common set of data variables and values within those variables. Given this harmonization activity, the fields including in the main table for this option is a subset of the fields in the main table for the other dataset options. Researchers interested in this dataset can contact the ABA to request the data dictionary in order to determine if this dataset will support their research question.
